Smart Enforcement

In May 2011, the Illinois House of Representatives passed the Smart Enforcement Act.  This legislation addresses the flaws in the “Secure Communities” program run by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The Smart Enforcement Act would make sure that if Illinois must continue to take part in Secure Communities, Illinois will do so based on terms that are hew to the values of the state: accountability, local autonomy, effective law enforcement, due process, and respect for families.  The Smart Enforcement Act will make Secure Communities conform more closely to President Obama’s stated priority of focusing primarily on dangerous criminals.  In doing so, it will make this program more accountable to local taxpayers, who will know that their law enforcement resources are not being wasted while destroying hard-working immigrant families.  And it will help make sure that ICE enforcement programs are less likely to provide opportunities for targeting of Latinos and other forms of racial profiling.
